BLUE CIRCLE OF DISSENT – Update

We are continuing to implement the online research, activities and events measure until September.

We have been busy however.

There have been submissions of responses to the An Essay on The Writings and Genius of Shakespear by Elizabeth Montagu

Here is an example from Priscilla Olympio

Phoebe Monologue – AS YOU LIKE IT

For more info in how to submit these outputs follow this link

Show Us The Genius Of Shakespeare – Elizabeth Montagu Study

We are continuing work on the preparation of STEWY installation at home and delivered paints, felt-tips, and hard copies.

You can download the PDF and we will collect the coloured in sheets after lockdown has been lifted and deliver workshops to complete the piece for exhibition.

Some of our participants made personal solo visits to Wollstonecraft sites on her birthday including laying flowers at her monument at St Pancras Old Church

We partnered with Newington Green Meeting House in their online Wollstonecraft birthday events and supported the launch of the new WOLLSTONECRAFT WALKS APP  by one of our heritage partners,  Fragments & Monuments, in collaboration with Scary Little Girls

We are continuing work on our digital outputs including the edit of the interview with Professor Anna Birch – supported by Neil Webster from Edwin Louis Fear Films. We have started the edit of the book of community produced poetry Hackney Dissent and the heritage booklet Blue Circle Of Dissent.

In addition we are building a YouTube channel containing ALL our filmed outputs over the last 10 years.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY WOLLSTONECRAFT

We would like to remember our local Hackney heroine today. philosopher, radical, and author of A Vindication Of The Rights Of Woman

Mary Wollstonecraft

Mary was born in Spitafields on April 27 1759

She set up a school in Newington Green (a hotbed of Dissent) and for a time lived in Hoxton.

As part of the NLHF project BLUE CIRCLE OF DISSENT we are creating an installation based on the STEWY graffiti artwork that will be back on the wall at New Unity once the building re-opens.

So for any that want to contribute to that installation print off and

colour in this stencil and we will collect at the end of lockdown and add to our laminates which hopefully will be hung in September 2020 at New Unity

WOLLSTONECRAFT WALKS APP Launch

WOLLSTONECRAFT WALKS APP has been launched today by one of our heritage partners,  Fragments & Monuments, in collaboration with Scary Little Girls

Today is of course the 261st birthday of Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) and the app focuses on the life and times of Wollstonecraft and her impact on women, politics and 21st century society and culture. You’ll discover secrets about Mary, her life and her Green!

In the app you can find:
WOLLSTONECRAFT WALK GUIDE: Take a guided audio walk around Newington Green stopping off at significant locations (The Cobblers, Newington Green School, Lady Mildmay pub) and
listen to the words of iconic feminist writers whilst hearing about the herstory of Newington Green.
Podcasts – hosted by Marina Garvey Birch and Erica McKoy:
speaking to local people about their experience of the walks, readings from Maya Angelou, Mary Wollstonecraft, Virginia Woolf, Michelle Obama
BTS convo with Anna Birch (Fragments & Monuments) and Rebecca Mordan (Scary Little Girls).
Fragments & Monuments performance and film archive (2000-2020)
School Assembly resources

‘We are confident this brand-new app will bring our historical neighbour Mary Wollstonecraft back to Newington Green
for a new audience. The Green is where Wollstonecraft set up a school for girls in 1784.’

ABNEY PARK RECEIVES £4.4M GRANT

There is fantastic news for one of our long standing  heritage partners!

Hackney Council have announced the successful bid for funds. Abney Park’s historic chapel will be brought back into use as a venue after Hackney Council was awarded £4.4m by the National Lottery to improve the park.

The funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The National Lottery Community Fund will also see major work to the rest of the gothic cemetery – one of London’s ‘Magnificent Seven’ – including a new cafe and classroom at the park’s main entrance and a new accessible entrance on Church Street, which will encourage more visitors to the park to enjoy its history and biodiversity.

As part of the improvements, an environmentally friendly heat pump will be installed in the park to provide heat and hot water to the park’s new buildings.

This local gem has seen us research Music Hall stars like Nelly Power and George Leybourne and most recently Abney Park created the Mary Hays Tour to support our project  BLUE CIRCLE OF DISSENT

Hackney Dissent Documentary

In May of this year Unity Arts delievered a week of heritage workshops in Hoxton and in Hoxton Hall called

HACKNEY DISSENT

Out of which we created a short film Hackney Dissent

The workshops, in partnership with Hoxton Hall, used slam poetry, research trips (including a special day at Dr Johnson’s House).

We used sources like The Vindication Of The Rights Of Woman to inspire work from all areas of our community to make an exhibition and share in performance.

Groups of 7-11 year olds, 12-18 year olds and 18+ all looked at debate, radical writings and how to communicate ideas.

We had a well attended sharing at Hoxton Hall on 31 May and on 1 June (a very HOT day) an exhibition and sharing at Dr Johnson’s House.

With the support of Edwin Louis Fear Films the Digital Outputs volunteers interviewed participants and were also part of the final editing process.

The documentry can be found here Hackney Dissent Documentary

Also you can find some of the research materials that helped inform the outputs.

We have more Heritage Film Workshops coming up so please contact us if you have an interest in filmaking documentaries and doing interviews with experts about Mary Wollstonecraft, Elizabeth Montgu and the Bluestocking Society.
